Our story began with empty roads, closed college gates and uncertainty.

On 16th November 2020, Kawaii Cakes opened its doors near VIT Chennai. We were excited, nervous and hopeful about bringing fresh, affordable cakes to the community.

Little did we know that our biggest challenge had only just begun.

Opening a Cake Shop During COVID-19

We opened our bakery between the first and second waves of COVID-19.

At that time, VIT Chennai—the largest university near our shop—was completely closed. Students had returned to their hometowns across India, classrooms were online, and the streets around our bakery were unusually quiet.

Most of our early customers were local families from nearby areas such as Mambakkam, Kandigai, Kelambakkam, Ponmar and Puthupakkam.

Every order, no matter how small, meant the world to us.

Then came the second wave.

Like many small businesses, we wondered what the future would look like.

Waiting for the Students to Return

After COVID restrictions started easing, almost every college in Tamil Nadu reopened.

But VIT Chennai remained closed for much longer.

During the pandemic, the university had increased its student intake significantly. Before welcoming everyone back, additional facilities and hostel arrangements had to be managed.

Months passed.

One year became nearly eighteen months.

We continued baking cakes every day, believing that better days would come.

A New Beginning with New Rules

Finally, VIT Chennai reopened.

We were excited because we thought students would once again visit our cake shop, just as they did before the pandemic.

But things had changed.

Students were no longer allowed to leave the campus on regular working days. They could only go out during holidays or with limited permissions.

At first, we worried.

Would people still discover our bakery?

Would they still celebrate birthdays with our cakes?

The answer surprised us.

Instead of students coming to our shop, our cakes started going to them.

Every Delivery Carried More Than a Cake

Students began calling us directly.

They shared hostel details, birthday timings and surprise plans.

We carefully packed every cake and delivered it to the designated VIT delivery point.

Soon, we realised something special.

Every delivery wasn't just a box containing cake.

It carried friendship.

Love.

Family.

Celebration.

Sometimes parents from Delhi wanted to surprise their daughter studying at VIT Chennai.

Sometimes a brother from Kolkata ordered a cake for his sister.

Sometimes friends from Kerala collected money together to celebrate a roommate's birthday.

Sometimes alumni remembered a friend's special day even after graduation.

Although we never met many of these customers in person, we became part of their happiest memories.

Quality Always Speaks Louder Than Advertising

When we started, we didn't have a large marketing budget.

In fact, we knew very little about digital marketing.

But we believed in something simple.

If every customer receives a fresh, delicious and beautifully decorated cake, they will remember us.

That belief slowly changed everything.

Customers recommended us to their friends.

Students recommended us to their juniors.

Parents shared our contact with other parents.

Positive Google reviews continued to grow.

People searching for a cake shop near VIT Chennai began finding Kawaii Cakes through Google, Swiggy, Zomato and other online platforms.

Many customers told us they chose us because of the genuine reviews and affordable prices.
